Surreal AR art transforms Kanazawa’s historic Nishi Chaya streets

A groundbreaking augmented reality art tour is bringing digital magic to the traditional teahouse district of Nishichayagai, blending centuries-old scenery with modern storytelling.

A magical AR art tour across Nishichayagai

Launched on April 13, this ongoing AR exhibition turns the iconic streets of Kanazawa’s teahouse quarter into an immersive narrative. Visitors purchase a ticket, scan a QR code, and watch as interactive artworks appear over the real-world surroundings via smartphone. At each designated spot along Nishichaya-dōri, scenes come to life—creating what organizers describe as “a mysterious moment as though you had stepped into a giant picture book.”

Revisit the experience at Art Café 33 yoi yoi

The tour’s reception is Art Café 33 yoi yoi, whose name combines san-san (“33,” symbolizing radiant brilliance) with yoi yoi (the pleasant sway of cheerful inebriation). The café serves as a relaxing space where guests can re-experience the works and take in Kanazawa’s cultural charm from a fresh perspective.

“The entire Nishichaya-dōri forms one narrative, promising a mysterious moment as though you had stepped into a giant picture book,” Kanazawa Biyori Co., Ltd. said.
