MycoWorks has introduced a new chapter in sustainable design with the unveiling of its “Reishi™ in the Nordic Light” collection at 3 Days of Design in Copenhagen. This exclusive showcase, curated by Marie-Louise Høstbo, brings together visionary Danish designers and MycoWorks’ groundbreaking biomaterial, Reishi™, to celebrate the intersection of heritage, innovation, and tactile beauty.
A New Dialogue Between Tradition and Innovation
Rooted in Denmark’s profound legacy of design where functionality meets beauty and simplicity is revered—the launch of Reishi™ in the Nordic Light .
At the heart of the project is the belief that the best design is a conversation between past and future, tradition and possibility. Marie-Louise Høstbo, curator, said, “This project creates a dialogue between heritage and innovation—honoring Danish design traditions while daring to explore the profound possibilities that a new material like Reishi™ presents.”
Reishi™: A Material Revolution
Reishi™, developed using MycoWorks’ patented Fine Mycelium™ technology, is grown from mycelium—the intricate, renewable root network of reishi mushrooms. The material is Rei-tanned™ and finished in Europe by heritage tannery partners, using MycoWorks’ proprietary biotechnology to achieve unmatched strength, durability, and tactile appeal
Collaborative Visionaries at the Helm
Their work with Reishi™ explores the timeless principles of Danish design simplicity, functionality, and tactile beauty while harnessing the transformative power of Nordic light.
- Atelier axo: Pioneers in cross-disciplinary design, Atelier axo presents the Eaves Lamp, a reconfigurable wall lamp that fuses metal and Reishi™. The lamp’s geometric clarity and tactile depth experiment with light modulation, creating an immersive experience.
- Maria Bruun: Introduces the Subject Matter Paravent, a modular screen that diffuses light through Reishi™ sheets and wood, reimagining spatial privacy with classic Danish sensibility.
- Frederik Gustav: Crafts the Arbor suspension light, merging Reishi™ with steel frames in a design inspired by kite structures, highlighting the interplay of organic and industrial forms.
- Cecilie Manz: Debuts Et Ark, a minimalist basket blending Oregon pine with a single Reishi™ sheet, emphasizing material synergy and Danish design purity.
- OEO Studio: Reinterprets Reishi™ in the Centurio lamp, fusing Scandinavian minimalism with the expressive potential of sustainable biomaterials.
The Power of Tactility and Light
Reishi™ inspires a new aesthetic language, available in a range of finishes and tactile sensations, from smooth and supple to full-bodied and rich.
Frederik Gustav shared, “Working with Reishi™ challenged us to respect the material’s organic properties. Its dual nature—robust yet delicate—guided us in creating a lighting piece that is both structurally sound and visually evocative, perfectly echoing the serene quality of Nordic light.”
Atelier Axo reflected, “Engaging with mycelium introduced a dynamic interplay between control and organic evolution. By allowing the material to lead the creative process, we discovered new aesthetics that celebrate imperfection as a source of unique character and innovation.”
OEO Studio added, “At OEO Studio, we don’t merely design objects—we craft experiences. With Reishi™, we fuse the timeless minimalism of Scandinavian heritage with groundbreaking material innovation, creating pieces that transform both space and perception.”
A Manifesto for the Future of Interiors
“Reishi™ in the Nordic Light” is more than an exhibition—it’s a manifesto for rethinking the spaces we inhabit. The collection highlights:
- Material Innovation: Reishi™ transcends traditional boundaries, offering structural integrity and a sensory, tactile quality.
- Tactility and Light: Each object is designed to diffuse and capture light, emphasizing texture and emotional resonance.
- Sustainability with Style: The collection proves that responsible design can be beautiful, timeless, and innovative.
