A significant cultural exchange took place on July 6, 2025, bringing together Chinese and Italian delegates to explore shared heritage and preservation between Liangzhu and Rome.
Bridging ancient heritage through mutual understanding
The event, held during the 2025 “Hangzhou Liangzhu Day,” highlighted Liangzhu and Rome as living laboratories for cultural heritage preservation.
Cristiano Varotti, chief representative of the Italian National Tourist Board (ENIT) in China, said:
“Identifying common ground helps lay the foundation for a shared future, fosters mutual understanding, and supports joint efforts to address global challenges.”
Experts noted Liangzhu’s philosophy of “harmonizing with nature” alongside Rome’s advanced ancient water management systems—both offering inspiration for today’s urban development.
Innovation in heritage conservation
Donato Abruzzese, associate professor at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, highlighted advanced technologies such as virtual reality and 3D applications to protect heritage sites while enhancing visitor interaction.
Balancing archaeology, conservation, and development remains key.
After touring the Liangzhu Ruins, Olga Di Cagno, archaeologist and councilor of Rome’s Fifth Municipal District, said:
“China’s achievements in preserving Liangzhu were truly remarkable. The visit showed novel approaches to heritage protection and value assessment. Exchanges like these are invaluable in today’s globalized era.”
Advancing global cultural synergy
Liangzhu’s ongoing “Liangzhu and the World” dialogue initiative continues to build international cultural exchange platforms, including previous engagements with the Acropolis of Athens and Spain’s historic city of Toledo.
The initiative has introduced Liangzhu culture to 14 countries via exhibitions and digital projects like the “Liangzhu Overseas Jade Database.” Experts agree that preserving cultural heritage shapes not only the past but a shared future.
